Compact data carrier
DataMatrix stores useful identification in a small marking area.

Direct part marking
Create permanent static or unique 2D codes that connect physical parts to production, quality, service and traceability records.
Machine-readable traceability
Code type, module size, quiet zone, contrast, surface finish, marking field and reader position must work together. We develop the mark and the verification method as one application, using your actual data and parts.

Generate a different code for every part or production cycle.
Link the physical code with build, batch, inspection or service records.
Confirm presence, content and readability before product release.
A fibre laser forms a DataMatrix code by engraving the metal or changing its surface contrast. The process must suit the alloy and finish, while the symbol must suit the available area, actual data and reader. A readable code also needs the correct content; decoding, data comparison and formal quality grading are separate checks.
Agree the result on marked samples instead of assuming one laser setting or minimum code size will work for every part. See metal materials and finishes, code verification and grading, and serial-number data and text marking.
Code design
The smallest possible code is not always the most robust. We balance available marking area with data length, symbol size, material contrast and the reading distance expected on the production line or in service.
Provide sample strings, prefix rules, character counts and any GS1 or customer-format requirement before trials begin.
Verification & records
A vision system can read the finished symbol, compare expected content and send a result to the PLC or production database. Where required, the cell can stop, reject or quarantine a failed component.
Closing the loop reduces the risk of an unreadable or incorrect code leaving the marking station.
Application questions
Every material and production process is different. We will help you turn the marking requirement into a practical specification.
Call 01865 362785The choice depends on available space, data content, customer or industry requirements and the readers used. DataMatrix is often selected for compact direct-part marking, while QR codes are widely recognised by general devices.
The practical limit depends on material contrast, surface quality, optics, data length and reader capability. We establish a robust size using marked samples rather than quoting a generic minimum.
Yes. A camera or code reader can inspect each finished symbol, compare the decoded content with the expected value and pass the result to production controls.
